Hard Hat FAQ

Safety and certification

Are these hard hats ANSI certified?

The shell is. Every hat is built on the same Pyramex Ridgeline full brim shell, certified to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type I, Class E. The hydro dip is a finish on the outside of that shell. The size and safety guide explains what Type I and Class E mean.

Does hydro dipping void the certification?

Drilling, cutting, or altering the shell voids its certification, and hydro dipping does neither. The dip is a finish on the outside of the shell. ANSI does caution that some paints and solvents can damage a shell, so the process matters. Every hat is dipped by our dipping partner, a specialist with years of experience on these shells. If your site has strict rules on customized hats, check with your employer.

Do these hats meet OSHA requirements?

OSHA doesn't approve or certify hard hats. Its construction rule, 29 CFR 1926.100, points to ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 for head protection, and every hat starts as a shell certified to that standard. Your employer's PPE rules still decide what your site accepts.

Can electricians and linemen wear these?

Every hat is built on a Class E shell, the highest electrical class in ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. The standard tests Class E shells at 20,000 volts. The dipped finish itself hasn't been electrically tested, and some employers and utilities require unmodified shells. Follow your employer's rules before you wear one for electrical work.

Do you sell Type II hard hats?

No. Every hat is built on the same Type I, Class E full brim shell. Type I covers impacts to the top of the head, the type most construction and industrial sites call for. We don't carry Type II hats, which add side impact protection.

How often should I replace a hard hat?

ANSI doesn't set a replacement interval. Follow the shell maker's schedule; manufacturers commonly say 5 years. The manufacture date is stamped inside the shell. Replace it right away after any serious hit, even if you can't see damage.

Fit and sizing

What size is the hat?

One size fits head sizes 6½ to 8. Every hat has a 4-point ratchet suspension, so you turn the knob to dial in the fit. There's no size to pick when you order.

How do I measure my head?

Wrap a soft tape measure about 1 inch above your ears and eyebrows, around the widest part of your head. Size 6½ is about 20⅜ inches and size 8 is about 25⅛ inches. The size and safety guide has the full chart.

Can I get a 6-point suspension?

No. Every hat comes with the same 4-point ratchet suspension, which fits head sizes 6½ to 8.

Buying it as a gift?

You don't need their hat size. Every hat fits head sizes 6½ to 8: the 4-point ratchet adjusts with a turn of the knob. If they'd rather have a different design, an unused hat can be returned within 30 days of delivery. See the return policy.

Finish and care

Will the finish scratch?

Sealed under a clear coat. It can scratch with hard use, but the design sits underneath.

How do I clean my hat?

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. Skip solvents and harsh cleaners. They can dull the clear coat, and ANSI cautions that some solvents can damage a shell.

Can I leave it in my truck?

Not on the dashboard or in a hot parked car. Heat above 120°F (49°C) can warp the shell, so keep it out of direct heat when you're not wearing it.

Shipping

How long does shipping take?

Ships in 1–2 business days · arrives in 3–5. Once it ships, USPS delivery takes 3–5 business days, and rural addresses can take a day or two longer. You'll get a tracking number by email when it ships.

Is shipping free?

Free US shipping on every order, with no minimum, to all 50 states. It's applied at checkout. Every order ships by USPS with tracking.

Do you ship outside the US?

Shipping is free to US addresses only. If you're outside the US, contact us before you order so we can confirm we can get it to you. Orders outside the US pay the carrier rate shown at checkout, plus any customs duties or import fees.

Returns

What's your return policy?

You can return an unused hat within 30 days of delivery for a refund. Unused means unworn, unscratched, and not taken to a job site. You pay return shipping unless the hat arrived damaged or defective, or we sent the wrong one. To start a return, contact us with your order number. The full return policy has the details.

What if my hat arrives damaged?

Send us your order number and photos of the damage within 7 days of delivery. Once we confirm it, we'll send a replacement at no cost to you.

Can I exchange my hat for a different design?

We don't do direct exchanges. Return the unused hat within 30 days of delivery for a refund, then order the design you want. There's no size to swap, since every hat fits 6½ to 8.

Discounts

Do you have a discount code?

There's one code: sign up for emails at the bottom of the home page and we'll give you a code for 10% off. Each customer can use it once, on any order. Buy 2 hats, save $10 needs no code. It comes off by itself at checkout when your order has 2 or more hats, any designs. A code and Buy 2 don't stack; checkout uses whichever saves you more.

Crew orders

Can I order hats for my whole crew?

Ordering 5 or more? Text or email us the designs and how many, and we'll get back to you within one business day. Everyone can pick a different design. Call or text (443) 371-3179, email orders@hydrodippedhardhats.com, or see crew orders.

Does everyone on the crew need to give a hat size?

No. Every hat fits head sizes 6½ to 8 with the 4-point ratchet, so you only need the list of designs. Each person can pick a different one.

Designs

How many designs do you have?

380+ designs, from American flag, camo, and skulls to carbon fiber patterns and trade designs. You can browse every one on the All Designs page.

Will my hat look exactly like the photo?

Close, but not exactly. Every hat is hand-dipped one at a time, so pattern placement and color shift a little from hat to hat. No two come out the same.

Who dips the hats?

Our dipping partner hand-dips every hat in the USA. They're a specialist with years of experience dipping these shells. HydroDippedHardHats is the hard hat brand of HHH Customs LLC.

Can you add my company logo or a custom design?

No. We don't add logos, names, or custom branding. Pick any design from the catalog. On a crew order, each person can pick their own.
